Photoluminescent exit signs are suitable for indoor use in commercial facilities where the lights are normally on while the building is occupied. Photoluminescent exit signs last for up to 25 years.

The second type of battery exit sign is called self-luminous. Self-luminous exit signs use a different type of non-electrical illumination technology called “tritium”. Tritium is a glowing form of hydrogen gas that illuminates naturally for 10 to 20 years, depending on the model purchased. These self-powered exit signs can be used indoors or out since they do note require electricity or light to operate. They are the most universal type of exit sign available.
