Loading... Please wait...Battery exit signs are exit signs that are battery powered. For projects that require an exit sign but electricity is not available, a battery exit sign would be the perfect solution.
Battery exit sign can be somewhat of a confusing term, because although there are exit signs that use batteries, there is no truly battery powered exit sign. The batteries inside exit signs are used only for emergency purposes.
Electrical exit signs use AC power to illuminate and also charge the battery inside the exit sign. When AC electricity is lost during a power outage, the battery inside the exit sign will provide at least 90 minutes of emergency illumination to the fixture.
Electrical exit signs with battery backup systems can commonly be referred to as a battery operated exit sign or a battery powered exit sign, which can often confuse consumers, leading them to believe the sign is solely operated on battery power.
For something such as a battery exit sign to exist, the battery would need to be extremely large. Such a battery would not fit into an exit sign. The point here is that there is no such thing as a battery powered exit sign because it simply is not possible.
Self-luminous exit signs require no electricity or batteries. Lasting up to 20 years, they are a simple and compliant battery exit sign solution.
For applications without access to electricity, there are two alternatives that provide the non-electrical feature of a battery exit sign. These “battery exit signs” are called photoluminescent and self-luminous.
Photoluminescent exit signs use glow in the dark technology to absorb normal light and then glow when the lighting system fails. Also known as glow in the dark exit signs, these exit signs will glow for at least 90 minutes after AC power fails. The only requirement for photoluminescent exit signs are that they have at least 5 foot-candles of light available to the face f the sign at all times.
This amount of light is used to adequately charge the glow in the dark material and insure the exit sign is ready to operate when power is lost. Photoluminescent exit signs are suitable for indoor use in commercial facilities where the lights are normally on while the building is occupied. Photoluminescent exit signs last for up to 25 years.
The second type of battery exit sign is called self-luminous. Self-luminous exit signs use a different type of non-electrical illumination technology called “tritium”. Tritium is a glowing form of hydrogen gas that illuminates naturally for 10 to 20 years, depending on the model purchased. These self-powered exit signs can be used indoors or out since they do note require electricity or light to operate. They are the most universal type of exit sign available.
Photoluminescent Exit Signs glow in the dark, install in minutes, and last up to 25 years. They are an easy and code compliant exit sign solution that mimics a "battery exit sign".
If you are searching for a battery operated exit sign look no further than photoluminescent and self-luminous exit signs. Even though battery exit signs do not exist, there are two non-electrical exit sign solutions. Both self-luminous and photoluminescent exit signs are UL Listed and compliant to the same building and fire code regulations as electrical exit signs, compliance is guaranteed.
Many people look for battery exit signs because they want to find an exit sign that runs on batteries. Who wants to pay an electrician to install an exit sign - it's not only expensive but it's also time consuming and a hassle. But, as we all know, batteries eventually out of juice, and they need to be changed or recharged. It is true that most electrical exit signs come with a battery, but that battery is only there for emergency backup purposes - there are no purely battery operated exit signs. But, do not worry, there are exit signs that DO NOT require electricity.
These "battery exit signs" glow in the dark with no need for electricity. There are two types of non-electrical exit signs, self luminous and photoluminescent. Self luminous exit signs use tritium, a glowing type of hydrogen gas, to create EXIT illumination that lasts up to 20 years. Photoluminescent exit signs glow in the dark using, believe it or not, the same glow in the dark technology as stickers that glow in the dark, just on an industrial level. Both signs are great choices for exit sign applications where electrical power is not available. Even though the battery exit sign does not exist, we still have a guaranteed code compliant - and maintenance free - solution for you.
