Emergency Lighting Explained

Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting refers to light fixture that illuminate during emergencies where electrical power is lost. The purpose of emergency lighting is to insure the quick and safe exit of building occupants to the nearest outdoor, public space. Emergency lighting fixtures are required to be installed throughout public and private buildings across the United States and Canada. Maintaining properly functioning emergency lighting fixtures can mean the difference between safety and tragedy.

Emergency lighting fixtures come in many different shapes and sizes, so it is important to make an informed, educated decision. This will insure that you get the right emergency lighting fixtures for the application that you are facing.

Emergency Lighting Features

There are a number of attributes which all emergency lighting fixtures share. All emergency lights require electricity and have a battery. The electrical connection works hand in hand to insure that when AC electrical power is lost, the emergency lighting fixtures illuminate brightly and for at least 90 minutes. During normal operations, when a building has electrical power functioning correctly, the electricity that feeds into the emergency light constantly charges the battery.

Battery Backup

After 24 hours of an emergency lighting fixture being charged, the battery will be ready to provide emergency power for illumination for at least 90 minutes. When electrical power to a building is lost, a relay inside the unit switches the light on and uses the battery to provide the power for illumination. This feature is held constant throughout the industry, regardless of the type fo emergency light that you purchase.

Emergency Lighting Applications

When picking an emergency lighting fixture, think about the environment that it will be installed into. Will it go indoors or outdoors? Will it be exposed to any type of moisture or hazardous materials? Also consider the aesthetics of the emergency lighting fixture. Are you installing this into a high-end interior such as a retail location, or are you installing it into a commercial/industrial application where it could be damaged or dirtied easily?
