Explosion lighting is a particular type of hazardous lighting fixture that is used in areas where explosions and/or fires may easily occur; such as plants that handle hazardous and flammable materials. There are different classifications that a business facility would fall into based on what type of hazardous or flammable product that it carries.
The three types classifications of explosion lighting:
There are three different classes of explosion lighting facilities that a business would fall into based upon the particular type of material that the facility is handling. The first class consists of highly flammable and hazardous materials such as petroleum / gasoline. The second type is for slightly hazardous or non-hazardous materials that have flammability potential. The third class is for facilities that store products which are non-explosive and non-hazardous; yet still have a potential for fire risk.
Why do I need explosion lighting for my facility?
Certain facilities need more protection than regular businesses that only have generic exit signs. These facilities would normally handle flammable or hazardous materials; which would create a need for higher flame-retardant protection against a large fire or explosion. Facilities that manufacture, handle, or produce explosive / flammable material are required by law to have specific emergency lighting in order to properly function during a fire, producing exit lighting long enough for employees to escape the building.
Class 1 explosion lighting
Class 1 explosion lighting is for facilities that handle highly flammable and hazardous materials such as petroleum / gasoline or chemicals. If an explosion or fire occurs in this type of facility, there would be potential for a high-temperature fire that could cause the emergency explosion lighting to stop functioning. Therefore, the class requires exit lighting that is of a higher standard and has a higher flame-retardant property than general exit sign lighting.
Class 2 explosion lighting
Class 2 explosion lighting would be used for facilities that store or manufacture grain, candy, flour, and generally non-hazardous material that still has a potential for fire hazard. Although this class does not have the potential for risk like the first class, there is still a risk for fire due to the particular material being handled or stored at these types of facilities.
Class 3 explosion lighting
Class 3 explosion lighting includes non-hazardous and slightly flammable product-handling facilities. These types of facilities would manufacture or process goods such as cotton and flax, or may simply contain excess sawdust shavings. Due to the potential for fires to spread quickly at these locations, there is a special need for emergency explosion lighting that these types of facilities are required to have.
