Hazardous location exit signs are designed for Class 1 Division 1 and Class 1 Division 2 areas. In Class 1 Div 1 areas, the hazardous materials are present in the environment during normal operations. Class 1 Div 2 areas feature hazardous materials, but only during abnormal operations (accidents, malfunctions). Select between a Class 1 Division 1 Exit Sign and a Class 1 Division 2 exit sign when ordering.
The Hazardous Location Exit Sign features a copper-free cast aluminum housing that is fully gasketed to prevent the intrusion of hazardous materials and the other elements such as water. The EXIT face is made from a high grade polycarbonate and available with red or green letters. Efficient LED illumination consumes less than five watts electricity. The Hazardous Location Exit Sign features a 90-minute UL Listed Nickel-Cadmium battery backup system.

The Hazardous Location Exit Sign is composed of an aluminum housing paired with a polycarbonate faceplate. The housing and faceplate are sealed together to prevent gases, vapors, and fluids from entering the inside of The Hazardous Location Exit Sign. The housing is tamper-resistant and features a hermetically sealed magnetic test switch that allows for easy testing of the nickel cadmium battery backup system. The entire housing is vandal resistant and approved for use in high abuse areas such as schools and prisons.
Hazardous location exit signs are also known as explosion proof exit signs. This is because their construction is designed to prevent any electrical component from igniting an explosion, thus the term "explosion proof". Hazardous location exit signs are commonly installed into manufacturing facilities that produce energy such as gas and coal. Hazardous location exit signs are also found on oil rigs and processing facilities for chemicals and solvents. Areas that contain such materials are deemed to be "hazardous locations" and thus need explosion proof exit signs like this model.

Red or green LED (Light Emitting Diode) light strips provide brilliant and powerful EXIT illumination while consuming less than 5 watts of electricity at all times. Included Self-Testing Diagnostics constantly monitor the circuit board, transformer, and battery backup system for emergency mode readiness. The reulsts of the self-testing are displayed by LED lights that indicate the functionality of the exit sign at all times.
Hazardous Location exit signs operate using 120/277v AC power. This exit sign is surge-protected, solid-state circuitry that provides for a reliable charging system. Other voltages available upon request such as 220v and 240v. Some models feature a temperature compensated charger. Charging system is complete with low voltage disconnect, AC lockout, and brownout protection. Test button is standard. Ordering the hazardous location exit sign with self-diagnostic testing is highly recommended.
Hazardous location exit signs feature a number of options that insure the electrical operation of the explosion proof exit sign is constantly monitored. One of these options is called "self-diagnostic testing". Self-diagnostic testing eliminates the maintenance and testing requirements typically associated with all types of exit signs. Hazardous location exit signs that are outfitted with self-testing feature a constant monitor that insures the charger, circuit board, battery, and lamps are always functioning properly. In hazardous locations properly functioning exit signs can mean the difference between being safe and being in harms way incase a sign is not working properly.
Hazardous Location Exit Signs feature a maintenance-free Nickel Cadmium exit sign battery provides 90 minutes of emergency support and lasts for 5-7 years. The Hazardous Location Exit Sign is also available in an AC only mode, which does not include the battery backup and is intended for use in buildings that feature backup generators.
