In New York City, these are coupled with the more stringent requirements of their city building code. Therefore, New York City Wet Location Emergency Lights are a category in and of themselves.
These emergency lights have been designed to satisfy the New York City building code, which requires a higher level of illumination than the National Electric Code does. That is, 2 foot-candles of illumination over the entire egress route, measured at floor level; instead of 1 foot-candle of illumination measured 1 foot off of the floor. To meet this higher level of illumination, the emergency lighting units are equipped with 9 watt bulbs, instead of the standard 7.2 watt bulbs. The battery size is also augmented, to accommodate the higher current draw of these higher wattage bulbs.
As is normal with wet location emergency lights, those manufactured for use in the city of New York are made with fiberglass cases. This prevents the risk of the cases rusting from exposure to water. They are also sealed to protect the interior parts from corroding.
New York City wet location emergency lights are intended for use anywhere within the five boroughs of New York City. They have already been approved by the city Building Department, as being in compliance with the New York City building code.
Wet Location Emergency Lights are generally used in all exterior applications, where the unit is directly exposed to the weather. This essentially means wherever rain may fall directly upon the lighting unit. There is another category of emergency lighting units for use outdoors called damp location emergency lights. These are designed for use where the unit is exposed to moisture, but not to direct rainfall. Covered entry porticos, areas under canopies, and covered walkways would be typical applications for the lesser expensive damp location units.
Typically, these units are only mounted to the sides of buildings, however there are exceptions. Federal regulations require that emergency lighting be provided not only within the building, to the egress point, but also on the exterior of the facility, up to a public way or safe assembly point.
Because these units are installed on the exterior of the facility, exposed to the elements, water isn’t the only weather hazard they encounter. New York City winters can be extremely cold, with many nights dropping below freezing. Since batteries don’t function as well in cold, it is important to protect them from these freezing temperatures.
For this reason, most New York City Wet Location Emergency Lights are shipped with an internal heater to keep the battery from freezing. Although common, this is an option that you need to specify when ordering. The few extra dollars spent on this option will insure that your wet location emergency light functions, even in below freezing temperatures.
