There are times in which there may be an emergency and lighting may go out and the facility is left dark. If such a thing happens there may be chaos which is natural since visitors can no longer see what is going on. Chaos such as this can be avoided through exit sign and emergency light combos.
These signs not only offer a directional function but in case of an emergency also come with a back up battery pack in which can then kick on the two emergency lights that are characteristically set on either side of the exit sign. In newer versions of signs such as these the more efficient LED lights are being used in order to conserve energy leaving the life of the battery longer so the emergency lights can stay on longer. Halogen type lights are also still being used in emergency lights as well. They work just the same but in some instances may use more power than the LED lights use.
These combination signs do not need to separate sources of energy. If plugged in they run off of one outlet and when needing to operate off of a battery they operate off of one battery pack that is usually always located in the housing of the sign. There are various different designs to these signs although the basic and overall concept is the exact same. There is always a typical sized illuminated exit sign.
There are several places in which the emergency lights can be placed on the combination signs. There are characteristically two emergency lights on each sign. They can be placed on either side of the exit sign, underneath the exit sign, or on top of the exit sign. Some of the styles have the emergency lights protruding from the exit signs while others have the lights encased in a small clear housing.
Combination exit and emergency lights also come in different colors as well. The aluminum of the exit signs can either be white or black but the lettering stays either red or green. The emergency lights are always a white light. Different color emergency lights may be seen on other fixtures but as far as the exit sign and emergency combination go the lights are white. These signs are just as easy to hang as a lain exit sign. There are surface mounted as well as recessed mounted sign combos as well.
Being prepared in a situation even if it is simply being prepared with a sign is monumental. To ensure guests safety to a facility having these emergency light and exit combos could decrease chaos in a time of no electrical power. In addition, those who may be hard of hearing may not be able to hear an announcement but will be able to see that the emergency lights are on and proceed to the nearest exit.
