Understanding the Regulations:

The National Electric Code (NEC) requires explosion proof lighting to be installed whenever flammable materials are present. Class 1 flammable materials refer to flammable gases and vapors (from liquids). Other classes refer to other flammable airborne materials.

Additionally, the NEC defines two different divisions, within the classes, which refer to whether the flammable gases and vapors are in the air as a normal (Div 1) or abnormal (Div 2) part of your business.

When we talk about explosion proof signs and lighting, we are usually referring to Class 1 Division 1 or Class 1 Division 2 exit signs.

The Class 1 Division 1 Exit Sign Combo combines an EXIT sign with a hazardous location emergency light.

What these definitions mean is that when we have operations that use flammable materials, the areas where they are used, stored and transported are considered hazardous location areas. As such, you are required to insure that all electrical devices installed in those areas comply with the design requirements of Class 1 Division 1 or division 2 devices.

The difference between Division 1 and Division 2:

• Division 1 areas where Class 1 materials (flammable gases and vapors) are used as a normal part of the operation are the most hazardous locations. Class 1 Division 1 exit signs are the most rugged, durable, and extreme exit signs manufactured.

• Division 2 areas are where Class 1 materials (flammable gases and vapors) are stored or transported as part of the abnormal operation of the facility. The actual appearance of the gases and vapors in the air would only happen as an abnormal part of operation, due to accident, container rupture, or spillage.

Types of Explosion Proof Exit Signs:

The regulations having to do with Class 1 Division 1 signs only refer to electrical exit signs, because that classification comes from the NEC. However not all “explosion proof” exit signs are electrical. There are two categories of illuminated exit signs that are non-electrical, meaning that they don’t have to meet the NEC requirements:

• Photoluminescent exit signs – These are made out of plastics that absorb and store light energy. When power is lost, they release this energy “glowing” in the dark.

• Self-luminous exit signs – These are powered by Tritium, a non-dangerous radioactive isotope of helium. As the tritium breaks down, it glows.

Since neither of these two types of exit signs uses electricity, they cannot produce sparks. Therefore, they are safe for hazardous locations where explosion proof lights are needed.

When comparing the price of these other “explosion proof” exit signs to the normal Class 1 Div 1 signs, one finds them to be much less expensive. Additionally, there are cost savings to be realized by not having to run the electrical wiring for these units or pay electrical costs.
