Loading... Please wait...Areas where hazardous, flammable materials are used require the installation of explosion proof exit signs and emergency lights. Specifically, areas where flammable gases or vapors are likely to occur as a normal part of your business operations must have explosion proof exit signs, also known as hazardous location exit signs.
Any electrical device has the possibility of creating sparks, which could ignite a fire. Explosion proof exit signs are designed as sealed units, to prevent any flammable vapors or gases from entering the light housing, where the possibility of electrical spark might exist. Additionally, the housings of such lights are designed to withstand the possibility of either internal or external explosion without rupturing.

The National Electric Code (NEC) requires explosion proof lighting to be installed whenever flammable materials are present. Class 1 flammable materials refer to flammable gases and vapors (from liquids). Other classes refer to other flammable airborne materials.
Additionally, the NEC defines two different divisions, within the classes, which refer to whether the flammable gases and vapors are in the air as a normal (Div 1) or abnormal (Div 2) part of your business.
When we talk about explosion proof signs and lighting, we are usually referring to Class 1 Division 1 or Class 1 Division 2 exit signs.
The Class 1 Division 1 Exit Sign Combo combines an EXIT sign with a hazardous location emergency light.
What these definitions mean is that when we have operations that use flammable materials, the areas where they are used, stored and transported are considered hazardous location areas. As such, you are required to insure that all electrical devices installed in those areas comply with the design requirements of Class 1 Division 1 or division 2 devices.
The Class 1 Division 2 Emergency Lights comes in a number of models and features a variety of popular options. UL Listed for the USA.
Similar to exit signs, a hazardous location emergency light are manufactured for use in the most extreme environments. These emergency lights are designed for the same exact applications as hazardous location exit signs.
Class 1 Div 1 and Class 1 Div 2 emergency lights are used in conjunction with hazardous location exit signs to create a safe and effective emergency egress system for facilities that contain flammable, explosive, or ignitable gases, vapors, or dust
Explosionproof Emergency Exit Combos:
Combination exit sign with emergency lights are an innovative and easy egress lighting solution for hazardous locations that require both an exit sign and emergency lights. Class 1 Division 2 exit sign combos are the most popular type of hazardous location combination unit available.
Explosion proof exit signs are often pair with explosion proof emergency lights. By pairing explosion proof exit signs with a set of emergency lights, only one electrical connection is needed and there is only one fixture to maintain. In addition to that, explosion proof exit sign combos are less expensive than purchasing individual exit signs and emergency lights for hazardous locations. We offer both Class 1 Division 1 and Class 1 Division 2 explosion proof exit signs.
The regulations having to do with Class 1 Division 1 signs only refer to electrical exit signs, because that classification comes from the NEC. However not all “explosion proof” exit signs are electrical. There are two categories of illuminated exit signs that are non-electrical, meaning that they don’t have to meet the NEC requirements:
Since neither of these two types of exit signs uses electricity, they cannot produce sparks. Therefore, they are safe for hazardous locations where explosion proof lights are needed.
When comparing the price of these other “explosion proof” exit signs to the normal Class 1 Div 1 signs, one finds them to be much less expensive. Additionally, there are cost savings to be realized by not having to run the electrical wiring for these units or pay electrical costs.
