LED Exit Signs are popular because of their low energy consumption, long lifespan, and affordable prices.
Buying an exit sign may seem like a pretty simple thing, however; there is a lot you should be aware of as you wade through all of the different choices available on todayís market. Location an type are some of the most basic of decisions you will need to make, but they are certainly not the only questions you will be asking yourself by the time the process is over.
An exit sign seems like the most basic and mundane item on your material list, until you start shopping for them. They vary in type and design almost as much as cars at your local dealership, but luckily, they won't cost as much. Since there are so many different designs, itís useful to know at least a little about each of them so you can make the most informed decision.
Thermoplastic exit signs are about the most basic of the electrically powered signs. With use of LED technology, these signs use very little electricity and are pretty inexpensive. They do, however, lack in durability making them a not so wise choice for locations such as factories where they might be prone to an occasional accident.
Cast Aluminum Exit Signs are quite a bit more durable than their thermoplastic counterparts. Built with durability and cost in mind, these exit signs can hold up to a little abuse. In addition to a stronger fixture, and since aluminum doesn't rust, these are also excellent choices for areas that may be damp, but not so much as to require a wet location sign.
Wet Location Exit Signs are in fixtures that are sealed to prevent any damage occurring to the sign as a result of excess moisture. These signs can be placed anywhere however, and since they are so durable, they make an excellent solution for areas prone to abuse.
Hazardous Location Exit Signs are built for extreme environments where flammable gases and liquids are in use. Constructed of high strength materials, and sealed airtight; these signs are constructed so that no fumes can penetrate the seal and find a spark causing a major incident. These signs are perfect for areas which pose any risk at all for an explosion, and have even been seen in factories that make screens for movie theaters as the vapors from the paint pose an explosion risk. These signs are of course a bit pricier than any of the other types of signs just due to their very nature.
Self-luminous exit signs are tritium powered, no electricity required! Plus, they have a 20 year lifespan.
Non-electric signs are perfect for areas that do not have an electrical circuit nearby. There are a couple options in regards to them and the most popular are the Photo-Luminescent and the Self-Luminescent types. Photo-Luminescent Signs use a technology that allows a sign panel to, most simply put, absorb ambient light and glow, similar to many childrenís toys. Self-Luminescent Signs use Tritium Gas, an extremely low grade radioactive material that will allow the sign to glow for approximately 12 years.
When choosing an exit sign it is also important to locate the UL and NFPA Seals of approval on the sign you buy. These seals show that the design of the exit sign has been tested by these laboratories and have met the requirements to be deemed as safe for the use in which they were intended.
