LED Exit Sign

LED Exit Sign

The vast majority of exit signs manufactured and installed today are internally illuminated by LEDs. The reason for this is the great cost savings advantage a LED Exit Sign over other forms of illumination. LEDs consume about 1/4 the energy of standard incandescent bulbs and last 50 times longer. Through the life cycle of the sign, this adds up to a considerable cost savings.

Regulations Regarding LED Exit Signs

There are a number of regulations that deal with the design and installation of Exit Signs in commercial facilities:

  • Exit signs must be installed in all areas where people are likely to be present. These signs must indicate the location of the exit door from that room.
  • In the case where the exit door is not visible from inside part of a room, exit signs must be installed which point the way to the exit.
  • Lettering on exit signs must be of high contrast to the background. Federal regulations require the lettering to be 6 inches high, with a 3/4 inch stroke (line thickness); except in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, were a 8 inch high letter, with a 1 inch stroke are required.
  • Signs must be illuminated, by artificial lighting, either internal or external, whenever the building is occupied. In most cases, this lighting is white, but New York City requires red lighting for Exit Signs. This lighting must stay lit for a minimum of 90 minutes after power loss.
  • Signs must be brightly enough illuminated to be visible from 100 feet away.
  • Nothing can block visibility of exit signs.
  • In corridors, exit signs must point the way (with arrows) to all nearby egress points from the building that are not visible to someone in the corridor.
  • All doors that do not lead to an egress point must be clearly marked with their function or the words “not an exit.”

As you can see, there is a lot said about exit signs. However, this is done mostly for safety in the case of emergency. You never know who will be in your facility, or when there will be an emergency requiring people to evacuate the building rapidly. So, you can’t count on people having the emergency evacuation plan memorized. While any of your experienced employees will know it, visitors will not.

Brows Our LED exit signs:

Combo LED exit signs feature a pair of emergency lights that are either top or side mounted to the LED exit sign portion of the fixture. If you need to purchase a set of emergency lights as well as an exit sign, choose a combination LED exit sign and eliminate the need for two separate fixtures. We even offer a LED exit sign combo that features LED emergency lamps, which allows the fixture to shrink in size and use a more reliable and efficient nickel cadmium exit sign battery.

Installing LED Exit Signs

LED Exit Sign Combo

LED Exit Sign Combos Are a 2 for 1, easy to install exit lighting solution.

LED Exit Signs are manufactured in a variety of styles, including Edge Lit transparent signs. Almost all exit signs come with a universal mounting bracket, allowing the sign to be flat wall, flag (sticking out from the wall) or ceiling mounted. In the case of edge-lit signs, they are manufactured to be either one-sided or two-sided. However, pretty much all other exit signs are universal, meaning they can be used in a one-sided or two-sided application. An extra faceplate is provided for use in two-sided applications.

New York City LED Exit Signs

New York City specifies that Exit Signs be mounted in an orientation (parallel or perpendicular) to the egress point, so that they will be visible to traffic moving towards that point. While other regulations don’t include this requirement, it is a valid rule of thumb. Having a sign mounted flush to the wall, when the traffic is coming to the door from either side, doesn’t accomplish anything. New York City LED exit signs features 8" tall red letters that are 1" wide and have a metal housing.
