Loading... Please wait...On many occasions putting an exit sign in the right place can get somewhat frustrating. The appropriate places for the exit sign to go can be in awkward little spaces in which electric can not be run. Fortunately there is a solution to the problem. That solution is a tritium self luminous exit sign.
A tritium self luminous exit sign actually requires no electric or battery power whatsoever. This sign stays lit 24 hours a day 7 days a week with no maintenance. These signs meet all requirements of the fire safety codes so they are deemed safe for use.
How do they work? They actually illuminate using a form of tritium gas. The process that it uses is similar to the process that is used to illuminate a television set. The process uses the electron of the tritium gas but the power of the one used in an exit sign is only about one quarter as powerful as the one used in the television tubes.
The tritium glows because it is sealed in glass tubes. These glass tubes are coated with a type of phosphor. The electrons from the tritium gas once placed in the hermetically sealed tubes attacks the phosphor. The reaction that is produced gives off a green illumination. This is the same exact process that is used in the tubes that are used to illuminate your television sets.
Self-luminous exit signs are tritium powered, no electricity required! Plus, they have a 20 year lifespan.
These signs must be handled properly. If a tube should break there is no hazard. The gas is actually a form of hydrogen. Hydrogen is even lighter than air so if a tube should shatter the gas is dispersed throughout the environment very rapidly. However the way that the signs are designed makes them fairly indestructible. There are many tubes holding the tritium inside one protective case, so if one tube should break the sign would still operate since there are many more. There is also a protective plastic sheet on the outside of the entire sign which makes it fairly tamper resistant.
Disposing of a self luminous sign is not necessarily as simple as throwing it in the trash. The manufacturer will dispose of the sign for you. Typically when the sign expires one can send the sign back to the manufacturer who will in turn fill out any type of paperwork that is necessary for correct and safe disposal of the product. This product is not dumped in a landfill but typically disposed of in a safe biohazard type of way.
Building and business owners prefer to have signs such as these because they are maintenance free. Not only that but these signs last for approximately 20 years. There is no electric to be run and they can be placed indoors and outdoors. This makes them very convenient and serves as a reliable directional function for patrons. These signs are great for places which may lose electrical power frequently. They do not need to be placed in direct sunlight to charge.
