This can create a problem when it comes to meeting regulations involving emergency exit lighting from commercial and public buildings. Wet Location emergency lights are waterproof and weatherproof, designed for outdoor use including in cold climates.
Regulations require that emergency lighting be provided not only to the egress point of a building, but lighting must also be provided to a public way or safe assembly point. This means that there are times when emergency lighting must be provided outside of the building, where it can get wet. Wet location emergency lighting fixtures feature airtight construction and reliable battery backup systems for emergency operation.
Wet location emergency lights are weatherproof. They can be used indoors and outdoors. Halogen lamps produce brilliant illumination.
According to the National Electric Code (NEC) wet locations are anywhere where rain can fall directly upon the light. This doesn’t just apply to areas outside of our facilities, it can also apply to areas that are considered part of the facility, yet outdoors, areas such as:
In all these cases and others, wet location emergency lights are required. Just like emergency lighting that is provided inside the building, these units must be separate units from the standard lighting, with batter backup to power the light in the case of power loss. There must be an internal sensor that recognizes when power is lost to the facility and turns the emergency light on. Wet location emergency lights, like indoor emergency lights must have enough battery power to remain lit for a minimum of 90 minutes in a power loss situation.
Heavy Duty Wet Location Emergency Lights are NEMA 4X rated and can be ordered with a battery heater for freezing locations.
Wet location emergency lights are made with high impact thermoplastic or fiberglass cases to resist rusting and exposure to the elements. The cases are fully sealed against moisture, with gaskets wherever case parts come together. The lamp heads themselves are also fully sealed, including the bulb sockets, to prevent water entering from that point and shorting out the light.
Other than these changes, which are made to insure that the light will not be damaged by water, or cease to function because of rain, wet location emergency lights are essentially the same as indoor emergency lights, specifically steel case emergency lights.
The same options for batter voltage and wattage are available for wet location emergency lights that are available for steel emergency lights. Likewise other options, such as remote lamp heads and automated testing are available.
When installing wet location emergency lights, electricians and maintenance personnel must insure that the water tight integrity of the light is maintained. Conduit should likewise be sealed from any intrusion of water. If cable is used, without conduit, strain reliefs with grommets must be installed to maintain waterproof integrity.
Wet location emergency lights require the same monthly and annual inspections as other emergency lights. Special care must be taken during the annual inspection to insure that the case’s seal is not damaged, folded or lost. Loss or damage of this seal would destroy the waterproof integrity of the emergency light.
