Wet location exit signs are defined by the fact that they are sealed from the possibility of water or moisture entering them and damaging internal circuitry. By definition, they must be capable of being exposed to direct rainfall, without any risk of damage. On the other hand, damp location signs require partial protection from above; whether that protection comes from a canopy, marquee or roof.
Typically, wet location waterproof exit signs are built with a more rugged case than inexpensive thermoplastic exit signs. There are also a number of vandal proof models available. Vandal proof signs are made with heavy aluminum cases, to protect them from damage by being struck. Even our self-luminous exit signs are waterproof and also completely non-electrical
Since wet locations are essentially exterior locations, one must also take into account the possibility of freezing temperatures. While many electrical components are essentially immune to cold; batteries, and important part of exit signs, are affected by excessive cold. If you are in an environment where freezing temperatures are encountered, you should have the internal heater option installed. This heater, while small, is enough to maintain the battery temperature above freezing, where it is capable of working correctly.
Any exterior application for a wet location exit sign is likely to be within the reach of vandals. As such, there is a regular risk of damage to these signs especially in central areas of large cities, where vandalism is common. Because of this, the extra investment for vandal proof signs is easily justified as a means of both protecting your investment and protecting the personnel of your company from having an exit sign that is destroyed, at the time of an emergency evacuation from the building.
As with all other exit signs, wet location exit signs must be tested on both a monthly and an annual basis.
Self-luminous exit signs will also work in wet locations. You may want to consider installing this type of sign, instead of installing standard wet location exit signs as their is no electrical requirement.
