Loading... Please wait...Installation of illuminated exit signs is a requirement in all commercial and public buildings. These lights must provide clear direction to the nearest egress point (exit door) from any area that is occupied by people during the course of a business day. The signs must be illuminated whenever the facility is occupied.
The cost of adding these signs to a facility can seem frivolous, especially to a small business, or one which is on a tight budget. This may cause some to try and eliminate the exit signs, or just find the cheapest signs on the market to install.
While inexpensive signs will still provide the necessary protection to meet regulations, the cheapest option may not be the best for your needs. Often, buying the cheapest of something means that you’ll have to replace it sooner than if you had invested in a better unit. This can be true of exit signs as well.
This isn’t to say that budget exist signs are any less functional than the higher priced ones. Nor is it to say that they are any less prone to failure than more expensive exit signs. However, they are more prone to breakage caused by striking (either inadvertent or intentional) than cast aluminum exit signs are. The cast aluminum case is much less prone to damage by striking than a thermoplastic case is.
Although not normally referred to as such, cast aluminum exit signs are essentially vandal-proof signs. The rugged case, which also forms part of the faceplate is much less likely to be damaged by thrown basketballs, rocks, being hit with sticks, or even a minor mishap with a forklift.
In cases where exit signs are likely to suffer mistreatment, the extra acquisition cost of installing cast aluminum emergency exit signs may be end up being a savings over the long run. Even the need to replace a thermoplastic sign once, along with the labor cost to replace it, can justify the added acquisition cost of cast aluminum exit signs.
Today, all our cast aluminum exit signs come with LED illumination, instead of the incandescent illumination provided on older units. The LED module is considered to have a life expectancy of 60,000 hours, 50 times greater than incandescent bulbs. That 60,000 hours is just a little less than seven years, drastically reducing your maintenance costs for replacing bulbs.
Additionally, exit signs which use LEDs for illumination consume 1/10 of the electricity of incandescent signs. Considering that most businesses have their exit signs illuminated 24/7, the acquisition cost of these units is quickly compensated for by the energy cost savings.
Government regulations require that exit signs be functionally tested on a monthly and annual basis.
